Huddersfield folk to make you proud on Yorkshire Day

Ahead of Yorkshire Day on August 1, Brian Hayhurst has returned to Huddersfield after 26 years in Spain and compiled a list of Huddersfield-linked people and companies he believes deserve recognition. The selection ranges from athletics to entertainment and local industry, beginning with Derek Ibbotson, born in Berry Brow and a 5,000m bronze medalist at the 1956 Melbourne Games, who later set the mile record in 1957 with 3.57.2. The list also includes Anita Lonsbrough, a 200m breaststroke Olympic gold winner, and James Mason, described as a Hollywood film star from Marsh in Huddersfield. It further names former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, entrepreneur Lawrence Batley and ITV newsreader Nina Hossain, among others.
