Massive Attack banned from Singapore after showing Palestinian flag at concert

Massive Attack has been banned from entering Singapore after members displayed a Palestinian flag and shouted “free Palestine” during a show at Star Theatre on Wednesday, 29 July. The British band—known for “Unfinished Sympathy” and “Teardrop”—performed in the Southeast Asian city-state, where displaying foreign flags and national emblems without a permit is illegal under strict public speech and assembly rules. Singapore police said on Friday, 31 July, that the two performers received “stern warnings” and will also be banned from re-entering Singapore. The Infocomm Media Development Authority added it will not approve future performance applications for the band. Police and IMDA said the actions could harm racial and religious harmony and urged people not to bring foreign politics that could undermine social cohesion.
