Matt Damon’s 2016 fantasy historical epic The Great Wall is finding new life on Netflix a decade after its release, despite a rocky start at the box office and with critics. The film, which reportedly earned nearly $335 million worldwide but was constrained by an “ultra-expensive” production budget, follows William Garin (Damon) and Pero Tovar (Pedro Pascal) as mercenaries search for gunpowder in China. They face an otherworldly alien threat known as the Tao Tei and eventually fight alongside Chinese soldiers. Released in China in December 2016 and in U.S. theaters the following February, it later faced backlash over casting choices and was rated 36% by critics and 42% by audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
