Mercury Music Lounge Closes Amid Battle Over Outstanding Repairs
Mercury Music Lounge, one of Lakewood’s remaining independent venues, is closing indefinitely after persistent repair problems and an order to vacate from the City of Lakewood. Owners Shane Molotik and Rae Gentry reopened the venue on Detroit Avenue in 2024, investing about $100,000 in upgrades including new sound and lighting systems, a new bathroom, a merch room and a renovated green room. But they said a leaky roof and ceiling plagued the space from the start, driving away musicians who worried about their gear. Since August, after legal questions and mounting repair costs, they decided to shut Mercury. The closure leaves venues like The Winchester, No Class, Mahall’s and The Foundry as remaining Lakewood options. Molotik referenced a Greater Cleveland Music Census finding that the city needs more large-capacity stages.
