Music Together: How Classroom Singing May Help First-Year Students Find
A study from China, published in Current Psychology, suggests that participatory classroom music-making in required courses can help first-year university students adjust to campus life. Led by Yujun Lu of Hainan Normal University and Fangyuan Li of Guangxi Arts University, the 16-week program was tested through a three-wave, non-randomized quasi-experiment across 12 intact classes at a Chinese university. Six classes received the music component embedded in compulsory instruction, while six comparison classes received theory-focused teaching covering similar content. Among 482 consenting students, 420 had complete data. Results showed bigger post-course gains in the quality of relationships with teachers and sense of belonging, with adaptation benefits becoming clearer one month later.
