Secondary-World Fantasy Series That Deserve More Attention
The article spotlights secondary-world fantasy TV shows that, despite quality, have often been overshadowed by bigger hits or ended too soon. It frames “high fantasy” as stories set in a fictional secondary world with its own geography, history, and rules. It references major examples such as The Wheel of Time, Game of Thrones (and spinoffs), The Witcher, and The Rings of Power, then argues that other strong series deserve more attention. Two shows get featured: The Shannara Chronicles, based on Terry Brooks’ The Sword of Shannara trilogy, set thousands of years after the fall of civilization and canceled after two seasons; and Galavant, a fantasy musical comedy created by Dan Fogelman, following the knight Galavant after King Richard kidnaps his partner Madalena.
