The Daily Hilario: Schumacher '94

A new Schumacher ’94 documentary on Netflix left the author “underwhelmed” and, despite decades passing, stirred old frustrations about Michael Schumacher and the Benetton team. The piece argues that 1994 in Formula 1 was already a “traumatic year,” with Ayrton Senna portrayed as the author’s lasting favorite. The documentary is criticized for what the writer sees as overly sycophantic and apologetic framing of alleged “dirty deeds,” including heavy use of a victim narrative. While some behind-the-scenes archival shots and nostalgic racing imagery are praised, the production is also faulted for jarring AI-generated sequences, mismatched engine audio, and “Drive to Survive”-style voiceovers.
