A new review in Frontiers in Molecular Medicine argues that the next breakthrough in tracking Huntington’s disease may come from everyday data. The disease is driven by expanded CAG repeats in the HTT gene on chromosome 4p16.3, allowing researchers to identify future patients decades before symptoms appear, but progression is still measured with episodic clinic tools such as the Unified Huntington’s Disease Rating Scale and the cUHDRS. Because symptoms can fluctuate non-linearly over short time scales, snapshot assessments may miss treatment effects. The review highlights “digital exhaust”—AI-enabled passive monitoring of activities of daily living—to enable high-frequency, longitudinal tracking. It also points to proof of concept: Roche’s Huntington’s Disease Digital Motor Score on a smartphone.
