Austin woman alleges hospitals denied miscarriage treatment
Austin woman alleges hospitals denied miscarriage treatment reports a dispute over miscarriage care involving St. David’s and Baylor Scott & White in Texas. Keierra Lynn Callaway, 40 and living in Austin, says she sought treatment for a miscarriage after days of care-seeking last fall, and her attorneys filed complaints with federal and regional Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) offices. The complaints were submitted against St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center and Baylor Scott & White–Round Rock, alleging the hospitals violated the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act by refusing stabilizing treatment. Attorneys also filed complaints with the Texas Medical Board and the Texas Board of Nursing. Callaway’s affidavit states she experienced spotting and significant abdominal pain beginning Oct. 9 at about seven weeks pregnant, and an Oct. 10 ultrasound did not show an intrauterine pregnancy. The hospitals cited physicians’ independent judgment.
