Bags distributed in Louisiana recalled for fiberglass, stainless steel

Baxter International Inc. announced a voluntary recall of certain intravenous (IV) medications that may be contaminated with fiberglass and stainless steel. The recall involves only specific lots of 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection (saline), Anticoagulant Sodium Citrate Solution, and 70% Dextrose Injection, though the company says a single manufacturer lot can contain thousands to tens of thousands of IV bags. The FDA reports contaminated saline IV bags were distributed to 14 states—Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia—between July 31 and Aug. 3. For the dextrose and citrate products, the FDA did not list all affected locations. Customers and providers are told to stop use and return affected units immediately. As of Aug. 25, no adverse event reports have been received.
