Bangor student who escaped mental health unit found dead by road, inquest hears
xCruzo Brief
An inquest has heard that Anthony Whittle, a Bangor University student who escaped from a mental health unit near Bangor, was found dead by the roadside in November 1994. Whittle, who had paranoid schizophrenia, had been admitted to the Hergest psychiatric unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd. His family said they heard a “crash and bang” as he fled through a window of an interview room and ran along a sloping roof. The fresh inquest began Tuesday after the high court ruled that the 1995 hearing was inadequate. Whittle made a call home on 24 November 1994, saying he wanted to go back. The jury heard he died the next morning beside the A55 near Llandygai.
