Disgraced surgeon Eljamel performed several wrong site surgeries, inquiry told
Disgraced neurosurgeon Sam Eljamel, formerly a consultant at NHS Tayside’s Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, was reported to have performed multiple wrong-site surgeries, an inquiry heard. The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) raised concerns after reviewing Eljamel’s spinal surgery practice, following complaints from patients. Evidence presented to the inquiry on Friday said an interim advice letter to NHS Tayside’s medical director in October 2013 stated there were concerns about his approach to pre-operative marking and post-operative care, including wrong site surgeries. The letter also cited that in cases involving wrong level surgery, Eljamel acknowledged he may not have been fully open with colleagues about outcomes, and the review team could not confirm whether patients were informed. Eljamel was suspended in December 2013.
