Doctor sued 700 patients for debts; 81 were arrested. Now he's a senator

Kansas doctor Roger Marshall, now a U.S. senator, was found to have sued more than 700 patients over unpaid medical bills, according to a New York Times analysis of court records. The reporting says arrests occurred in 81 cases after patients missed court dates. In one example, on Easter weekend in 2007, Joe Vasquez and his wife were detained during an egg hunt after a lawsuit stemming from a $4,561 emergency hysterectomy bill ended in a missed court appearance. The couple spent two days in jail before posting bond. Records also describe 18% annual interest, wage and bank garnishments, and lawsuits filed via Marshall’s practice.
