England Beats Mexico 3-2 to Reach World Cup Quarterfinals
England advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals by beating Mexico 3-2 in a Sunday match at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The victory came in a high-stakes setting where England had previously been hurt by Diego Maradona’s 1986 “Hand of God” goal against Argentina, and this time the outcome was driven by Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane. Bellingham scored twice, 98 seconds apart, early in the first half, stunning a crowd of 80,824 at a venue where Mexico had gone unbeaten in 10 World Cup matches. After Jarell Quansah was sent off and England played with a man disadvantage, Kane converted a penalty six minutes after the red card to restore a two-goal lead. Kane added his 6th tournament goal and moved within one of the Golden Boot leaders, while Mexico fought back through Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez. England next faces Norway on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida.
