Erectile Dysfunction Drug Tadalafil Keeps Muscle Stem Cells in a Powerful
Cell research suggests tadalafil, the long-acting PDE5 inhibitor known for Cialis, could influence muscle regeneration beyond improving blood flow. In a study published in Molecular Biology Reports, researchers at the University of Rome Foro Italico, led by Cristina Antinozzi and Luigi Di Luigi, exposed mouse C2C12 myoblast cells to 1 micromolar tadalafil for up to seven days. Compared with controls under low-serum conditions, tadalafil increased cell proliferation and survival and reduced cell death across the treatment period. The drug also boosted early myogenic factor gene expression, though the study notes a more complex effect on the overall myogenic program, including terminal differentiation. The findings add to PDE5 inhibitors’ links with nitric oxide/cGMP signaling and raise questions for muscle-wasting diseases and anti-doping oversight.
