Five Competences: A New Roadmap for Community Mental Health in
A new study published in Discover Mental Health argues that community mental health should be built around local capability, not just professional services. The research synthesizes findings from the Ga Mashie Mental Health Competence Project in Accra, Ghana, led by Francis Agyei of the Fred N. Binka School of Public Health at the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho. It draws on a community survey of 384 residents and qualitative work with 77 participants in Jamestown and Usshertown. The paper develops “community mental health competence” into five interconnected domains—representational, relational, identity, participatory, and structural competence—intended as a structured, testable framework. It reframes mental distress responses as shaped by social networks, group identities, and local conditions.
