Generative Language Models for Disease Treatment Recommendations: A Systematic Literature Review - Journal of Healthcare Informatics Research

A systematic literature review (SLR) published in Journal of Healthcare Informatics Research examined how generative AI (GenAI) has been used to generate disease treatment recommendations. Using an online form to break down research questions, researchers screened literature after an initial search yielding 31 studies (27 from databases and 4 via snowballing) and a supplementary search adding 12 more, for a total of 42 works. The review found nine disease categories. Oncology/cancer had the most—10 studies—followed by cardiovascular and metabolic and ophthalmological diseases (6 and 5). The paper also flags growing interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine and multi-disease approaches.
