Hero doctors perform historic penis transplant from donor to save man's sex life
Surgeons in Vietnam have carried out the country’s first penis transplant using an organ from a brain-dead donor. The procedure took place at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital and involved a 43-year-old recipient who previously had part of his penis removed at the same facility. After four years of recovery, he could use the toilet normally but had sexual functioning concerns that affected his mental health. Surgeons reconstructed anatomical structures including the urethra, corpus spongiosum and corpora cavernosa, and used microsurgical anastomosis of arteries, veins and nerves. Early reports say the site is healing well with no early complications. Doctors stressed long-term evaluation of erectile function and rejection risk will take time. The case is only the sixth reported worldwide since 2018.
