A new study suggests that the speed at which a patient’s whole-body pain “map” shrinks after knee replacement may help predict who is likely to develop chronic pain. Published in Frontiers in Pain Research, the work followed 624 patients undergoing primary unilateral total knee arthroplasty in China. Instead of relying only on pain intensity scores, researchers used whole-body pain drawings at two weeks, six weeks, and three months after surgery, converting shaded regions into a Pain Extent Index (PEI). Using image-processing tools and quality controls, the team measured each patient’s “contraction velocity” via linear mixed-effects modeling. The findings indicate that pain’s trajectory over time carries information that single snapshots miss.
