How fishing is improving veterans' mental health
xCruzo Brief
Research and local NHS programmes in the UK point to fishing as a low-cost activity that can support mental wellbeing. A 2022 study by Anglia Ruskin University found that regular participation in fishing was linked to higher mental wellbeing and fewer depressive and anxiety symptoms than less regular involvement. In Greater Manchester, Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust began running fishing sessions with a charity at its Prospect Place site, saying the activity helps people get outdoors, learn skills, spend time with others and focus on something meaningful. The Angling Trust’s Get Fishing for Wellbeing project also runs sessions, backed by a bursary from the Environment Agency for instructor training.
