Inside the First Weeks of Childhood Leukemia: What Parents Say They Need

A qualitative study published in the Journal of Child and Family Studies examines what parents of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) go through during the induction phase—the first and most intensive stage of treatment. Researchers interviewed 41 Portuguese parents whose children were treated at three major cancer hospitals in Portugal, including teams led by Ana Ferraz, Martim Santos, Mónica Jerónimo, and M. Graça Pereira from the University of Minho and the Pediatric Hospital of Coimbra. The study used inductive content analysis with NVivo to identify five themes spanning the emotional and practical journey from diagnosis through the end of induction. It highlights that even though survival rates in high-income countries exceed 90%, reassurance based on statistics doesn’t blunt the immediate shock, information overload, and uncertainty tied to prolonged hospitalization and chemotherapy side effects.
