Who should represent Southwest Michigan in Congress? Candidates make their case

Three candidates are competing to represent Michigan’s 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House: incumbent Republican Bill Huizenga, state Sen. Sean McCann, and Green Party candidate Shafina Che Barnett. Huizenga, co-owner of Huizenga Gravel Co. in Georgetown Township, won reelection in 2024 with 55% of the vote. McCann has served as a Kalamazoo city commissioner and state representative and later became a state senator. The district covers all of Allegan and Van Buren counties plus parts of Berrien, Calhoun, Kalamazoo and Ottawa, stretching from Port Sheldon Township to Lincoln Township along Lake Michigan and including Battle Creek, Portage and Kalamazoo. The voter guide is produced with the League of Women Voters and Vote411; Barnett did not respond to the survey.
