Lasers Outside the Mouth Win Over Young Cancer Patients, Study Finds
xCruzo Brief
A study from Brazil suggests that, for families of pediatric cancer patients, how photobiomodulation is delivered may matter as much as the therapy itself in managing oral mucositis. Oral mucositis affects roughly 50% to 80% of children on chemotherapy, usually appearing 3 to 10 days after treatment and lasting up to three weeks, sometimes causing severe complications. Published in Supportive Care in Cancer, the crossover trial compared intraoral laser application with an extraoral approach that delivers light from outside the cheeks and lips. Caregivers reported nearly two-thirds preferred the extraoral method, driven mainly by comfort, across cycles spaced about three weeks apart.
