This island was home to the planet's largest penguin colony. Here's why it just lost that title | CNN

Zavodovski Island, an uninhabited volcanic outcrop in the South Sandwich Islands, has lost its standing as the world’s largest chinstrap penguin colony. Scientists report a decline of more than half a million chinstrap penguins since 2011, when British Antarctic Survey researchers previously identified it as the biggest colony. Results published Wednesday in Current Biology found the number of occupied chinstrap nests fell 63% between 2011 and 2025, equating to about a quarter of the island’s chinstraps disappearing. BAS researchers reached the remote site from the Falkland Islands, using drones, aerial photography and tracking devices, and linked the drop to human-driven climate change.
