An Ebola outbreak in Congo's Ituri region continues to strain communities as fear and misinformation hinder medical care. The outbreak, caused by Bundibugyo ebolavirus, was confirmed May 15 and has killed at least 204 people as of June 19. Bunia, the epicenter, sits in a remote, conflict-affected district where distrust of health workers drives many to seek traditional healers or religious leaders before hospital care. Transmission occurs through close contact with bodily fluids of the sick or deceased, and there are no approved medicines or vaccines for this strain. The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.
