Maryland’s cyclospora outbreak surpasses 100 cases as the FDA continues investigating the source. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported more than 100 confirmed cases of cyclospora-related illness in Maryland, driven by an ongoing nationwide outbreak. The FDA said it is still identifying the source, which is believed to be linked to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms in Mexico. Taylor Farms previously said it was “voluntarily removing” the lettuce, and Taco Bell pulled the product from its restaurants. Although the FDA noted a false-positive test over the weekend, it said the result does not change its investigation or the recall basis. Symptoms can include watery diarrhea and other gastrointestinal problems lasting days or weeks. Maryland’s health department confirmed 110 cases this year, with 106 reported between May 1 and July 21, including 27 domestically acquired and 47 internationally acquired cases. Nationwide, the CDC reports at least 1,600 illnesses across 34 states, with no deaths reported.
