Measles cases top 4,000, far surpassing last year's total, CDC says
The CDC reported that confirmed measles cases in the U.S. have reached 4,080 as of Thursday, surpassing the total from all of 2025. This year’s tally already tops 4,000 and is the highest so far this year, with last year recording 2,289 cases and the most in three decades. Most states and Washington, D.C., have reported cases, and Pennsylvania crossed 1,000 total cases after adding 145 new cases on Wednesday. Pennsylvania’s health department reports five measles-associated deaths in 2025, defined as occurring within 30 days of symptoms and tied to lab-confirmed infection. In New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul declared an emergency, expanding who can administer vaccines and who can order testing. CDC data show 95% of patients were unvaccinated or had unknown status.
