Might be cancer': How a simple stomach ache changed this dad's life

A simple stomach ache became a turning point for Shawn Beilfuss after he drove home from an airport in Europe-bound family time. When symptoms worsened over days into severe, wave-like abdominal pain, he sought pharmacy help for constipation, but treatment did not improve his condition. He went to hospital, where doctors ordered blood tests and imaging including a CT scan, leading to the discovery of a complete bowel blockage that “might be cancer.” Surgeons removed a large bowel cancer and about 25 lymph nodes, with six later testing cancerous. Follow-up MRI found three liver spots and additional lymph nodes with possible cancer activity, diagnosing stage four bowel cancer. The surgery left him with a stoma. Beilfuss began chemotherapy in February and is on his 11 of 12 cycles; a mid-treatment scan found no detectable active cancer. Colorectal surgeon Dr Carolyn Vasey emphasized screening and early medical assessment, noting symptoms can be minimal until blockage occurs.
