Months after New York’s record nurse strike, Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx said it plans to cut 12 utilization review nursing jobs, a move the nurses’ union links to an AI-driven reorganization. The positions are spread across the Moses, Einstein and Weiler campuses. Letters dated May 28 informed 12 nurses, including a registered nurse with 39 years at the hospital, that their employment would end Sunday, after a 45-day notice period. The New York State Nurses Association alleges Montefiore began automating utilization review earlier this year and named Datavant as the software vendor, though Montefiore disputed that characterization and did not identify who would take over the work. Utilization review nurses handle insurer paperwork and clinical review that can affect coverage approvals and denials. The layoffs face scrutiny because they follow a contract that ended this year’s strike, which included AI protections. The hospital is part of an $8.8 billion system that posted a 2025 operating loss of $120.9 million.
