New Thyroid Research Challenges Diet Myths About Broccoli, Gluten and Sea Salt - [your]NEWS
A comprehensive review published April 6, 2026 in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation challenges common thyroid-diet rules around broccoli, gluten, and sea salt. Researchers found insufficient evidence to routinely avoid cruciferous vegetables or adopt a gluten-free diet unless there is another medical condition. Instead, they highlight that adequate intake of nutrients—particularly iodine, selenium, iron, and zinc—matters for normal thyroid hormone production. The review, conducted by Italian endocrinology and nutrition researchers using studies from January 2005 to June 2025, argues that broad food eliminations can unnecessarily reduce beneficial nutrients. It also warns that some specialty salts may leave consumers without iodine.
