Ohio ranks behind Kentucky, Indiana (but ahead of Michigan) on this list

Ohio placed No. 42 in US News’ 2026 Overall Best State Rankings, landing in the bottom 10 behind Kentucky, Indiana and Pennsylvania but ahead of Michigan. The study, published the week of July 27, assessed each of the 50 states using 71 metrics across eight categories: Education, health care, economy, infrastructure, opportunity, fiscal stability, natural environment, and crime and corrections. Utah topped the list, while Louisiana ranked last at No. 50. Ohio’s strongest showing was opportunity (No. 18), but it ranked lower in natural environment (No. 43), healthcare (No. 36) and crime and corrections (No. 37).
