Study suggests cholesterol-filtering treatment also lowers 'forever chemicals'

A German study suggests that a cholesterol-lowering procedure may also reduce “forever chemicals” (PFAS) in the bloodstream. Researchers examined apheresis—double-filtration plasmapheresis—at the Technical University of Dresden, described as the world’s largest apheresis center, where up to 10,000 procedures are performed annually. In 34 patients undergoing two sessions, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol fell as expected, while levels of four PFAS reportedly dropped by as much as 25%: perfluorohexane sulfonic acid, perfluorononanoic acid, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, and perfluorooctanoic acid. The findings, published in Brain Health, were consistent across two labs.
