Study tests psilocybin to fight cancer side effects

A study published Thursday in Science reports tests of psilocybin, the hallucinogenic compound in magic mushrooms, as a potential way to prevent chemotherapy side effects—specifically peripheral neuropathy. Researchers tested psilocybin in rats and human tissues, saying the condition affects about three quarters of people receiving chemo, with about a third developing ongoing, burning pain. The article says symptoms can impair walking and may persist for life, and sometimes force doctors to reduce or stop chemotherapy. The team found psilocybin protected nerve cells, including by supporting mitochondrial transport and preserving electrical activity. A non-hallucinogenic analogue showed similar effects, and experts stressed more safety and effectiveness testing before any standard use.
