Support for LGBTQ+ Rights Has Dipped. What Changed?

Support for LGBTQ+ rights has declined after peaking in the early 2020s, a new Gallup poll shows. Marriage equality support stands at 65%, down from a 2022 high of 71%. Broader acceptance has waned as 62% of Americans now deem gay or lesbian relationships morally acceptable, versus 71% in 2022. Republicans drive much of the shift, with support for same-sex marriage dropping from 55% in 2021–22 to 37% now. Campaigns to end marriage equality have emerged from nearly 50 organizations, even as public protections exist under the Respect for Marriage Act. The Williams Institute notes rising HIV stigma, and conservative voices are most associated with lingering stigma. The Human Rights Campaign emphasizes that pride and visibility remain essential, and polling indicates ongoing partisan divides in attitudes toward LGBTQ+ rights.
