Surrogate asks the Supreme Court to intervene over care for a sick baby

A California surrogate, McKenna West, has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to step in amid a custody dispute over a 4-week-old baby born with a serious heart defect. West, who refused the intended parents’ request for an abortion, traveled to Dallas to deliver in August—when most abortions are banned in Texas. She filed an emergency petition seeking to halt a California court order that recognizes Omar Ahmed and Nausheen Gilkar as the parents, arguing they won’t provide life-saving care. The boy, born Aug. 12, has hypoplastic left heart syndrome and underwent surgery shortly after birth. West claims the couple sought an abortion at 23 weeks; the Supreme Court case file is sealed, and the couple has not responded.
