Who was diagnosed with cancer at 32 - what I wish I'd known at the start
At 32, GP Huw McCandless was diagnosed with an incurable glioblastoma after months of unusual symptoms and a blackout while driving in late 2023. Referred to a neurologist, he was first assessed for a possible heart problem. On Boxing Day, he collapsed and was taken for a CT scan, which revealed a large, fast-growing brain tumour; within a fortnight it was confirmed as glioblastoma grade three or four. Doctors said a fall he’d had while running likely triggered a seizure. McCandless underwent seven hours of surgery and six weeks of radiotherapy. Early scans showed the tumour stable, and appointments later shifted to every six months. In January 2025 he had another seizure, and in May the tumour grew back, with treatment continuing as he aims for his 40th birthday on 8 April.
