Woman seriously injured in shark attack at Sydney beach
A shark attack at a Sydney beach left a woman with serious injuries, underscoring a troubling uptick in coastal wildlife incidents that have drawn public concern across New South Wales. Authorities said the 35-year-old was bitten by a large shark about 30 metres from the shore at Coogee Beach on Saturday morning, prompting an immediate emergency response. A bystander pulled her from the water and people on the sand began first aid as paramedics arrived to stabilize her condition. NSW Ambulance officials later described the injuries as serious, noting deep wounds to the arms and legs that would require extensive surgical treatment and follow-up care. In response, Coogee Beach and other beaches in Randwick City were closed for 24 hours to enable coast guard patrols and safety assessments before authorities would consider reopening. Council Mayor Dylan Parker said officials would be coordinating closely with the New South Wales government to determine when it is safe to lift closures and resume normal beach access. Witness Nicola Logan told Reuters she saw a massive pool of blood and described frantic splashing as a ski paddler tried to pull the woman toward the shore. The incident comes after a fatal attack in Western Australia a week earlier and a separate incident on Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef last month, highlighting ongoing risk in Australian waters.
