Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture said Monday that late-August torrential rain in southern Taiwan caused NT$10.29 million (US$323,000) in agricultural losses as of 5 p.m., based on updates from local governments. Earlier figures reported NT$6.15 million as of 11 a.m., with Tainan accounting for 95% of the total. The revised report puts Tainan’s losses at NT$7.19 million, or 70% of the overall damage, followed by Yunlin (NT$1.18 million), Pingtung (NT$1 million) and Kaohsiung (NT$920,000). The rain affected 203 hectares of crops, with an average damage rate of 20%, equivalent to the full loss of 42 hectares. Watermelons suffered the largest hit at NT$3.69 million, while no livestock, fisheries, forestry or private facility losses were reported.
