Asked 'Why Such a Nice Girl Would Paint Such Wild Pictures.' The Rest Is Art History.

A newly surfaced body of work is putting Marguerite and William Zorach’s modern-art partnership back in focus, with the Independent 20th Century art fair featuring “William and Marguerite Zorach: A Symbiotic Relationship.” The couple began collaborating in Paris in early 1911 after meeting through a painting class, and both were selected for the 1911 Salon d’Automne. They married in New York the following year, adopting “Zorach” from William’s birth name. The exhibition at Sotheby’s New York is displaying about 40 pieces, including newly recovered embroideries and little-known batik textiles.
