Baker William Herbert, III (Bill)

Baker William Herbert, III, known as “Bill,” died peacefully at home on July 16, 2026, at age 84, with family present. He was born June 30, 1942, in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Cheverly, Maryland. After his mother died in 1954, he moved to Washington to live with his grandparents. Bill attended St. Ambrose School through 7th grade and Sacred Heart School for 8th grade, later graduating from Archbishop Carroll High School in 1960. He earned a B.A. in Economics in 1964 from The Catholic University of America and completed mortuary science studies in 1965 at Echols College in Philadelphia. He married Kathryn Wangness in February 1966 and served in the DC National Guard from 1965 to 1967. His career included regulatory oversight at the Federal Power Commission and later the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, including projects connected to liquefied natural gas, such as the Cove Point facility. He is survived by his wife, four children, and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
