Fan-owned club, a 'band of optimists' reflects Canada’s soccer moment through TSS Rovers, a supporter-owned semi-professional team in Vancouver’s orbit. Founded in 2017 from the TSS Academy (which traces to 1997), the club was created to create a pathway for Canadian players to reach pro ranks and, eventually, the national team. The vision has produced notable links to international success, including defender Joel Waterman, selected for Canada’s 2022 and 2026 World Cup squads, and Julia Grosso, who scored the winning penalty in Canada’s Olympic gold win in Tokyo. Competing in the British Columbia Premier League, the third tier of Canadian soccer, Rovers also became Canada’s first supporter-owned soccer club in 2021. More than 450 community shareholders have joined, with fans dubbed the “Swanguardians.” The club plays at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, where World Cup buzz in Canada has drawn unprecedented attention.
