Harry Kane sends England into the round of 16 of the World Cup after 2-1 win against Congo
Harry Kane sent England into the World Cup round of 16 with a 2-1 victory over Congo on Wednesday, sealing the knockout berth at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. After Congo’s Brian Cipenga gave them a lead in the seventh minute, England rallied in the second half. Kane equalized with a header after the break and then scored the winner in the 86th minute, placing his shot into the top corner. The match kept England from an upset that looked increasingly likely, given their history of only winning once at previous World Cups after conceding first. Kane reached five goals at the tournament and raised his World Cup scoring record to 13, with 84 goals for England overall. His first goal came in the 75th minute after a cross from Anthony Gordon, despite Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi getting a hand to the header. Referee Adham Makhadmeh waved away England’s penalty appeals, and Yoane Wissa struck the post in the first half.
