Fishing for Dinner: Great Lakes Study Reveals the Hidden Food and Culture
xCruzo Brief
A new Ambio study on urban shore fishing in the lower Great Lakes challenges the idea that most anglers fish mainly for leisure. Researchers surveyed 443 anglers across ten cities on Lakes Erie and Ontario, finding that food provisioning and cultural meaning are central organizing dimensions of the fishery alongside sport and relaxation. Led by Mahatub Khan Badhon of Virginia Tech and the University of Dhaka, with collaborators including Leandro Castello, M. Aaron MacNeil, Steven J. Cooke, and Vivian M. Nguyen, the work draws on one of the largest multidimensional surveys to date. The team sampled 48 shoreline sites in cities including Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Rochester, plus Canadian hubs such as Toronto and Kingston.
