Lindsey Vonn has a special understanding of Serena Williams' comeback as a fellow 40-something
Lindsey Vonn says she understands Serena Williams’ comeback as a fellow athlete in her 40s preparing to return at Wimbledon. Williams, 44, will play both singles and doubles, after making her first professional match in nearly four years recently. Vonn, who also returned from a long absence, told The Associated Press that both athletes are in “the same boat,” emphasizing that they can still compete at an elite level without needing to prove anything. Vonn spoke after watching Williams’ doubles win with Victoria Mboko at Queen’s Club in London. She noted Williams was in “great spirits” and said she believes the skier inspired Williams to come back. Vonn’s own return follows eight surgeries after a February crash at the Milan Cortina Olympics, including a severe left-leg fracture, and she continues deciding whether she will compete again.
