Lionel Messi leads Argentina to 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt and spot in World Cup quarterfinals
Lionel Messi powered Argentina to a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Egypt in the World Cup Round of 16 on Tuesday, overturning a 2-0 deficit with just 11 minutes remaining. Messi scored in the 83rd minute to make it 2-2, his eighth goal of the tournament and a record-extending 21st World Cup strike. Argentina’s comeback continued after Cristian Romero’s involvement in the 79th minute, followed by Enzo Fernandez scoring the winner in stoppage time. Egypt had led through goals by Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico, while Messi missed a first-half penalty saved by Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. The defending champions advance to face either Switzerland or Colombia in quarterfinals on Saturday in Kansas City, Missouri, aiming to become the first repeat winners since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.
