Luxury Cruise Passengers Stranded Amid Iran War Fuel Crisis
More than 200 passengers who bought the option to live aboard a luxury cruise ship as a long-term “floating home” were forced to leave after soaring fuel prices made the Odyssey’s global plan unsustainable. Villa Vie Residences, based in Florida, announced Tuesday, October 27, that it was suspending operations of the Villa Vie Odyssey, which had been sailing around the world since September 2024. The ship remained docked Wednesday in Sihanoukville, where residents were told to disembark while the company pursued emergency financing and restructuring. The AP reported the vessel carried 203 passengers from 15 countries, mostly Americans, along with 156 crew. The operator said monthly fuel costs per cabin rose from about $1,800 to $6,000–$8,000 in parts of Asia after the Iran war began. Residents reportedly received about seven hours’ notice and some criticized limited support; a statement emphasized restructuring and temporary arrangements.
