Massachusetts family loses four members in Dominican Republic fire
A Massachusetts family is mourning four relatives who died in a fire at an Airbnb in Barahona, Dominican Republic, shortly after they arrived for a planned three-week trip. The family of 12 had traveled from the Lawrence area to reconnect with their roots and conduct baptisms for two of the youngest, but early on June 13 they were asleep when the fire broke out, killing four. Those who died include a 5-year-old boy, Luzybeldriz Fadul, 42, Pancracia Mercedes Rodríguez, 75, and Jhoselin del Carmen Rojas, 69. Two of the older relatives, Rodríguez and Rojas, died on June 21 after extended stays in intensive care. Family members said the younger boy was from Lawrence and declined to share his name. A GoFundMe raised close to $9,000 against a $250,000 goal to cover medical and funeral costs, and the article notes the fire was unrelated to another deadly blaze at a Dominican Republic beach resort in Bayahibe on June 19.
