Lee Wilson drove an 8,222-mile (13,232 km) loop around the United States in his orange, all-wheel-drive Volkswagen ID. Buzz, using charging and overnight flexibility to prove the EV is practical for long trips. The journey relied on a removable Peace Vans kitchen box, letting him camp, stay in hotels, or sleep with friends while traveling both eastbound and westbound routes. Wilson said his biggest takeaway was charging infrastructure: during the entire cross-country trip, they saw only two spots with a single charging option—remote parts of northern Utah and New Mexico—and both worked. He typically drove about two hours, then charged for ~20 minutes.
