Miles Russell caps U.S. Open experience with a special Father's Day present
Miles Russell capped his U.S. Open run with a meaningful Father’s Day gesture, tying for 43rd after shooting a closing 70 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York, on June 21. The 17-year-old from Jacksonville Beach posted a total of 7-over-par 287, finishing just before 2 p.m. At a June 17 news conference, Russell had described the week as memorable, but he made it even more personal when he surprised his father, Joe Russell, with a planned handover during the final hole. After hitting his second shot to the 18th green, Russell sent caddie Ramon Bescansa to the rope line, giving his father the bag and caddie bib for the walk to the final green. USGA rules officials had confirmed it was permissible. NBC reported Joe Russell did not know the plan. Russell’s performance also included five fairways and five greens early, with notable missed birdie putt chances and a final birdie on the par-5 fifth.
