New Fishing Packages Boost Local Clubs for Weekend sets out how the NSW government plans to expand “Gone Fishing Weekend” in 2026. Celebrations are scheduled for 17–18 October 2026, with NSW encouraging fishing clubs and fishing organisations to apply for specially designed fishing packages now. Applications close on 11 August 2026. The packages include rod and reel kits, giveaways and other resources meant to support welcoming, family-friendly local events that promote recreational fishing. Major events will be hosted by DPIRD in Sydney, Lake Illawarra, Lake Macquarie, Grafton, Lake Wallace (Lithgow), Lake Oberon (Reef Reserve), Lake Windamere (Cudgegong Waters Park) and Mudgee (Lawson Park). Ahead of the weekend, DPIRD will also run community initiatives including “Fish for Life: Women on the Water” workshops on 11 July and “Take a mate” fishing days on R U OK? Day, 10 September.
